What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic health modality. What this means is that Osteopathic treatments take a whole-body approach to health and wellbeing.
During your initial consult, your Osteopath will determine the cause of your complaint by taking a detailed medical history, followed by a thorough physical examination.
This forms the groundwork of a unique treatment plan that goes beyond physical treatments. Your Osteopath recognises that additional factors also play a role in your health, and will incorporate diet, work, and lifestyle adjustments into your health and wellbeing plan.
In addition to assisting with cases of pain and injury, Osteopathy also focuses on helping patients lead a healthier, more energetic life. By strengthening the body’s natural defences and resilience, your Osteopath can help insulate you from future problems.
Osteopathy uses a variety of treatments which may assist with your pain or help you strengthen and condition your body. This may include…
Joint manipulation and mobilisation
With their understanding of biomechanics and joint function, osteopaths may be able to restore mobility to dysfunctional joints, and can potentially reduce joint pain.
This can range from HVLA thrust techniques, to gentle back-and-forth oscillations.
Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that connects muscles, organs and joints.
Myofascial release applies direct and indirect pressure to tense, inflamed and immobile fascia. This relaxes and “releases” them, which may assist with pain and cases of restricted movement.
By directly applying pressure to knots, sources of tension and trigger points deep in your tissue, your Osteopath may be able to relax muscles and ease tension.
Additionally, massage can promote the flow of blood and lymph, which may help relieve muscle pain.
Dry needling uses an in-depth understanding of the human body to directly target trigger points, release muscles and undo knots.
Dry needling uses fine needles to reach affected tissue, which may help relieve tension and pain.
