Women’s Pelvic Health

Holistic Bodyworks is now offering Women’s Pelvic Health appointments! Our Osteopath in Oakleigh Dr. Jessie Wood has recently completed her training in Pelvic Health, so we thought we’d tell you all about it…

Firstly, let’s get to know our Osteopath Dr Jessie Wood

Graduating in 2006, Jessie has over 16 years experience as an Osteopath in Oakleigh and has been a senior team member at Holistic Bodyworks since 2019. She has worked in a range of clinics across Melbourne giving her a diverse skill base that is constantly developing and evolving.

She has a passion for understanding the human body, and she loves the problem-solving nature of being an Osteopath. She believes that everybody is unique, and as such, every treatment is unique, making Osteopathic practice both challenging and immensely rewarding.

Jessie is driven by her passion for supporting women and families. This passion has led to completing post-graduate studies in the following;

  • Paediatric manual therapy for newborn babies, toddlers and children
  • Pre and postnatal care for expecting mothers
  • Cranial and biodynamic osteopathy and most recently…
  • Women’s pelvic health

So, what is Women’s Pelvic Health?

Women’s Pelvic health relates to the overall structure of the pelvis and how well it is functioning together to support the organs within the pelvis. This includes;

  • the pelvic bones – sacrum, ilium, ischium, and pubis
  • the pelvic joints and ligaments – sacroiliac joints, lumbosacral joints, sacrococcygeal joints and the pubic symphysis
  • the pelvic floor muscles and fascia.

What type of symptoms might result from Pelvic Health Dysfunction?

Pelvic health dysfunction varies greatly and can look different for everyone. Women can experience a diverse range of symptoms that can cause significant distress and discomfort.
Examples of such symptoms include:

  • Hip, back and/or coccyx pain
  • Pelvic girdle pain
  • Genital pain
  • Bladder incontinence
  • Faecal incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Bladder and bowel urgency
  • Prolapse symptoms
  • Pain during sex
  • Menstrual pain
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Plus many more….

Why see an Osteopath for a Pelvic Health consultation?

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, a Pelvic Health consultation with our Osteopath in Oakleigh at Holistic Bodyworks can assist in diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating your dysfunction. Seeing an osteopath like Jessie is a great way to start taking control of your pelvic health.

What happens in a Pelvic Health Consultation?

In a consultation with Jessie, she will start with listening to why you have come to seek pelvic health treatment, then she will take a detailed medical history, before starting her assessment and treatment. In most consults she will also ask for you to do a little homework called a Bladder Diary!

During every consult Jessie will always check-in with you as a patient. Consent is essential in any form of osteopathic treatment but due to the intimate nature of the pelvic health consults she will take even more care in ensuring your still okay to proceed.

Pelvic health treatment varies depending on your symptoms and what you feel comfortable in proceeding to do. Treatment can be internal, external, observational and also just a discussion in a safe place.

When attending a Pelvic Health appointment at Holistic Bodyworks, please remember

  • To wear loose fitting clothing
  • To bring a chaperone to the appointment with you if you feel more comfortable
